In an update to residents on Monday, council leader Graham Butland said they were "yet to receive confirmation on an exact date from the Home Office" and there are "many that still need addressing and clarifying".ĭespite the judicial review permission hearings taking place this week, Cllr Butland said: "There are currently no restrictions that prevent the Home Office from proceeding with their plans." The judicial review would be on eight grounds, including a challenge to the use of the land, the need for planning permission to have been obtained, as well as challenges against the Home Office's "failure to take a range of matters into account as part of their decision making process, including the conflict with the Local Plan, health care, traffic implications and wastewater". The council applied for a judicial review, and a hearing took place today on that application, with that continuing tomorrow. The use of military bases is part of the government's plan to reduce the use of hotels to house asylum seekers - but there is fervent opposition from the local council. There are plans for there to be 1,700 asylum seekers residing at the site in Braintree, Essex by the autumn. The Home Office has confirmed that 46 single male asylum seekers have arrived at the Wethersfield military site - despite the council seeking a judicial review.
